Intro

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM THE FLOW CHICKEN PACKAGE?

If you dream about riding nothing but flowing singletrack and hardly touching the brakes, this is exactly what you’ve been looking for. The perfect flow is what the entire MTB team is trying to seek out, so it would be rude not to share our favourite trails with you. We can guarantee you an unforgettable week of epic riding with breath taking views, while experiencing the beautiful Slovenia in a completely unique way. The trails have been selected in such a way as to maximize the variety of terrain, trails and nature without straying too far from the essence – flow and fun on a bike. Your riding experience will be enriched by the friendly English speaking locals, great atmosphere, supreme culinary pleasures found in local restaurants and the cultural and historic variety of Slovenia.

IS THE SELECTION OF TRAILS SUITABLE FOR ME?

All the rides have an intermediate degree of difficulty, so we recommend class 3/5 fitness, meaning that you are able to cycle uphill for a maximum of 1.45hr at moderate pace and can climb at 10% gradient in a comfortable gear. When the trails point downwards, our clients need to have a good command of their mountain bike over moderately technical terrain, including roots, occasional steeps and rocky terrain.

Itinerary

Day 1: AIRPORT ARRIVAL AND TRANSFER TO KRANJSKA GORA

We meet you at Ljubljana airport and transfer to the north western mountainous part of Slovenia, to the town of Kranjska Gora, situated in a picturesque valley near the Austrian and Italian border. Our starting base is the Berghi apartment house just 7 minutes walk  from centre of Kranjska Gora. The apartment homes offer comfortable, elegantly furnished and carefully maintained rooms, so you can relax from your journey and get your body ready for the days ahead.

Day 2: AROUND KRANJSKA GORA, TRIPOINT AND PLANICA

After a hearty breakfast at the hotel and customary morning coffee, we ride up through the Stan Valley towards mount Peč (1,509 m), better known as the Tripoint where the borders of Slovenia, Italy and Austria meet. The climb is mostly by fireroad through the forest, with a few nice views of the Western Julian Alps thrown in for good measure. The descent offers a number of different trails, so there is room for all skill levels. After descending down into the village of Rateče, we ride to nearby Planica, home of the world record ski jump. From Planica we ride some more singletrack back to Kranjska Gora.

Day 3: HEART OF THE KAMNIK-SAVINJA ALPS

In the morning we pack into our van and ride towards Preddvor and the mountain pass of Davovec, our goal for the day. The descent leads us down a fantastic trail into the scenic valley of the Kokra river. The return to Preddvor is a mix of fireroad and singletrack. After the ride we again pack into the van and head off to Ljubljana to settle in the award winning Celica hostel, a converted former military prison. A walk through old Ljubljana city centre and a few drinks on the riverfront will provide a suitable end to a day well spent.

Day 4: HILLS SURROUNDING LJUBLJANA

Slovenia’s capital is encircled by a ring of rolling hills that are chock full of fast flowing singletrack. Trails that start just a short ride from city centre can be combined into miles and miles of pleasure and fantastic views of Ljubljana, the Alps and lush greenery all around.

Day 5: VIPAVA VALLEY AND ČAVEN

After breakfast we load up the van and drive off to Ajdovščina (106 m), where we saddle up and start making our way uphill towards mount Čaven. The tarmac road takes us up past the picturesque villages of Lokavec and Predmeja and after about 2.5 hours of grinding we make our way up to the mountain hut on Čaven (1,242 m). During the climb we can enjoy great views over the Vipava valley and once we make it to the top, the view is truly breathtaking. The descent back to Ajdovščina is rocky and challenging in places, but it has beautiful natural flow and it just never ends! After the ride we sit down in a local restaurant for a well-deserved meal of local specialties and wine. We are, after all, in the middle of prime wine country. We then drive towards Bovec (valley of the Soča river) and settle in at the Skrita jasa.

Day 6: MATAJUR (FRONT LINES OF THE GREAT WAR)

Morning starts with coffee at the local coffee shop. A 35-minute van ride takes half way up mount Matajur to the village of Livek, where we continue the fireroad climb towards the mountain hut on Matajur (1,545 m). Since Matajur is slap bang on the border between Slovenia and Italy, we take the Italian trail down towards San Pietro al Natisone. The descent is 1,400 vertical meters and 12 kilometers of never ending singletrack. In San Pietro we stop in the local gelateria for home made ice-cream and a latte macchiato and wait for the van to take us back to Bovec. On the way back we stop in Kobarid and check out the museum of the Isonzo front, one of the bloodiest and longest lasting battles of the First World War.

Day 7: KOBARISKI STOL

On the last day of the trip we set our sights on Kobariški stol. The van saves us the trouble of pedalling up the tarmac road and all we have to do is an hour and a half’s steady climb up a fireroad to the mountain pass, where we are again treated with a beautiful view. The descent takes us down a disused military alpine trail from the 1st World War down to the village of Žaga and from there we follow the river upstream back towards Bovec. Now all there is left is to dip our aching legs in the ice cold and crystal clear river or pay a visit to the hotel saunas. And then, as is customary for the final evening, a good dinner and drinks at the Black Sheep bar.

Day 8: TRANSFER TO AIRPORT VIA SCENIC VRSIC PASS

The way back to the airport takes us up the Trenta valley and over the highest mountain pass in the country where the Julian Alps are sure to take your breath away again. Of course, if you wish to extend your stay in the Soča river valley, we will be happy to arrange everything you need – lodging, activities, etc to make sure your good times continue…

FAQ’s

GATEWAY AIRPORT

The airport where we usually pick up our clients is the Ljubljana Jože Pučnik International Airport (LJU). A number of low cost carriers run scheduled flights to and from the airport.

INFORMATION ABOUT TRANSFERS TO/FROM THE AIRPORT

We plan two dates and times for transfer to the airport. Transfers are always planned for Saturdays. If any guests arrive too early, they can spend a night in nearby Šenčur Pr Sknet, and have us pick them up there.
– 16:00 at the Ljubljana Airport main terminal building
– 16:45 at the Pr’ Sknet B&B and restaurant in Šenčur (for guests who arrive a day early).

The shuttle from Bovec back to the airport departs in the morning. Shuttle stops at:
– 13:00 at the Ljubljana Airport main terminal building
– 13:45 at the Pr’ Sknet B&B and restaurant in Šenčur (for guests who depart a day early and wish to spend the night).

WHAT KIND OF BIKES DO I NEED?

The best bike to have with you for our Flow Chicken Extreme rides is a good all mountain or enduro bike with at least 120 mm of travel. The bike should not weigh more than 16 kilos as the week includes quite a bit of uphill riding. Hardtails are always an option, provided your knees and back can take the punishment.

SPARE PARTS FOR MY BIKE?

Most bicycle spares and components are available for purchase in bike shops around Slovenia. But, to set your mind at ease, we recommend you bring the following set of spares with you:

  1. rear derailleur hanger (better two than one)
  2. two sets of brake pads
  3. chain (if your bike chain is older than 6 months)
  4. 4 inner tubes (with the appropriate valve)
  5. 4 spokes (appropriate lengths for your wheelset)
  6. Shock pump (particularly if you ride a Cannondale:) )

You can also do away with worrying about spares altogether and rent a bike for the week.

CAN I RENT A BIKE?

Sure! We have a number of Specialized, Trek and GT bikes available for rent. For a full list of bikes, sizes and pricing, contact tony@activusoutdoors.co.uk. Bikes can be reserved upon booking to eliminate any chance of not having a bike ready and waiting for you when you arrive – check out options and prices: 2015rental

WHAT CLOTHING DO YOU RECOMMEND?

With the exception of May and October, weather in Slovenia is rather stable and not too cold. Expected temperatures in May and October are between 10 and 25 C and temperatures between June and September are between 15 and 30 C. Packing rain gear is always good as the weather makes no guarantees.

PACKING LIST

Clothing and accessories:

  1. at least two cycling jerseys with short sleeves and one with long sleeves
  2. padded bike shorts (two pairs if possible)
  3. bike helmet
  4. knee pads (elbow pads optional)
  5. sunglasses
  6. bike gloves (2 pairs)
  7. rainproof jacket and pants
  8. warm “civilian” clothing (fleeces, pants …)
  9. swimsuit, towel
  10. sunscreen and insect repellent
  11. personal hygiene set (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo…)

Your riding backpack should carry at least:

  1. 2 liters of fluid/day (hydration bladder or plastic bottles)
  2. 1 spare inner tube (appropriate valve)
  3. tools
  4. pump

Plus any other stuff you can’t ride without!

WHAT ABOUT FOOD AND MEALS?

All the meals of a full board package (breakfast, lunch, dinner) are included in the package and need not be paid separately. Breakfast and dinner are part of the half-board lodging option at each hotel. Only snacks are packed for the trails as each day includes a stop at a specially selected local restaurant, serving local home made food. The places where we eat are just as important as the trails and have been selected for their friendly atmosphere and range of foods characteristic for the area. We kindly ask our guests to report any special nutrition needs in advance (vegetarians, gluten free …) so we can notify the hotels and restaurants accordingly.

CASH AND EXPENSES

The official currency in Slovenia is the Euro €. Additional costs you may encounter during your stay includes souvenirs, drinks in bars, massage treatments in hotels, etc. Most places allow payments by credit card, but we recommend you visit an ATM machine and pay in cash. Tipping is welcome (if you are satisfied with the service), but not mandatory. The usual tip is around 10% of the bill.
